How to ensure inclusive development in Malawi?

13. november, kl. 18:00-19:30
Fellesrådet for Afrika, Ujeni Records og Utviklingsfondet
Kirkegata 5
Facebook event

Malawi is among the few countries in sub-Saharan Africa that witnessed significant improvements in relation to meeting the Millennium Development Goal (MDG) targets. However, it is ranked as the third poorest country in the world by IMF. Weak economic growth, frequent blackouts, poor public transport and lack of vital infrastructure characterize the country. What is the problem? Is the political leadership to blame? And what should be done to push development in Malawi?

Most of the country's poor are small scale farmers dependent on subsistence farming, and the agriculture sector accounts for about 30 percent of the country's gross national income. What role does agriculture have in developing both the country and creating possibilities for the people of Malawi? And what role can creative industries play?

Afro soul artist, songwriter and guitarist Faith Mussa will open the debate with a couple of his songs. Mussa combines traditional African vibes with modern sounds, and has performed at festivals such as Glastonbury and Lake of Stars.

In the panel:

Faith Mussa, Malawi's first and only "electronic one man band", creative and artist

Victor Kachika-Jere, Programme Manager Malawi for the Development Fund of Norway

Asbjørn Eidhammer, former ambassador to Malawi and author of "Malawi: A place apart»

Moderator will be Hildegunn Tobiassen, Policy Director in the Civil society department in Norad. Tobiassen has lived and worked in Malawi.
