Greet Nkrumah for us (a dirge)

Wednesday, July 25, 2012 - 09:11, by Nana Kofi Acquah

Great new ghost,
Greet Nkrumah for us
Tell him we miss him

You two were like twin towers
standing tall, shining bright
whilst they plotted and schemed
to pull you down...

but even in death you still stand tall.

Great new ghost,
Don't tell Nkrumah we called you names
Just like we did to him.
Don't tell him we wished you death
Just like we did him.

If the wailing of a million breast-beating women
will bring you back, we will employ them
If the dirge from our flutes and fontonfroms
will bring you back, we will invoke them...

But to who will you return?
To what will you return?

Once again, a saviour has been… ( Read on! )

La Pleasure Beach in fresh pictures

Monday, July 16, 2012 - 01:24, by Nana Kofi Acquah

I’ve always said the La Pleasure beach is a microcosm of Ghana but today, I might have to stretch that truth just a little further.

La Pleasure Beach is a microcosm of the World!

I still remember five years ago, when Shirley patiently pealed off the several layers of blindness and naivety with which I had approached the beach.

She owned a bar there, and as an old friend from school, she was happy to induct me into their world.

I got to know who were the pimps, the workers, the gigolos, the pushers, the junkies and everybody and anybody that mattered.

I know I have enough photos from this… ( Read on! )

The Bakery

This photograph is from Gagnoa, Ivory Coast, shortly after the war. It was beautiful to watch life return to normal. War is the easiest path to poverty a nation can take. It will always enrich a slimy few but kill many souls, shatter many families, destroy  many dreams, rape many young women, orphan many children and stop a nation's development clock.

The world doesn't need more wars, but wars are hard to avoid when idiots hold reins.

The Pearl of Africa- images from Uganda

Uganda was described by Winston Churchill as "The pearl of Africa"; and for good reason. Enjoy these images. I am back in Accra now.

He feeds the world but sleeps hungry

Monday, July 02, 2012 - 22:28, by Nana Kofi Acquah
I was originally going to write a post on why one shouldn’t date a goat but then saw this photograph I have of an Ivorian Cocoa Farmer. I find his pose and stride intriguing. His clothes are tattered. He holds his hat like a cowboy who just got off his horse. I love the image. He’s poor but cool. I wish I could change the poor bit.
I have always said Africa’s poverty is just the by product of a leadership crisis. A perpetual leadership crisis. It’s like having a land that never sees sunshine; and yet wonder why its citizens are depressed. It is like having a land that never sees… ( Read on! )

Kafi was born two hundred metres away from São Jorge da Mina, the first slave castle built in tropical Africa. (Read on!)His grandmother had a pub where wayfarers, fishermen, their wives, officers and anybody who had trouble or was looking for a little happiness would come, buy tots of the local gin, “akpeteshie” and start pouring their souls out. He would crawl under tables, eaves dropping and soaking it all in. When he got bored listening to them, he’d run to the beach, sleep in a docked canoe, play soccer with his friends, catch crabs or help some fishermen pull in their catch of the day. He has always loved good storytelling. He got a degree in English from the University of Cape Coast and has been working as a Radio Presenter, journalist and in advertising before deciding to pursue photography full time. He owns a well equipped studio in the heart of Accra but most of his photography is done on location. He mainly focuses on Africa and so far has shot (still photography and directing and producing video) for corporates, NGOs and magazines in Angola, Nigeria, Mali, Senegal, Gambia, Cote D’Ivoire, Liberia, and Ghana. His work has been exhibited in Europe, Africa and America.
