Climate change is not gender neutral

Monday, March 15, 2010 - 16:00, by Moreblessing Mbire

This year, women around the world celebrated the International Women’s Day under the theme, ‘equal rights, equal opportunities: progress for all’. Women across the globe commemorate this day to reflect on their struggle for equality, justice, peace and development. It is against this backdrop that this writer decided to write on climate change, an issue whose gender dimensions and effect on everyday life need to be emphasised. As acknowledged by the 2007 Human Development report climate change threatens to erode human freedoms and limit choice.  The report further emphasizes that… ( Read on! )

Women’s Rights to Land in Zimbabwe

Thursday, February 18, 2010 - 12:30, by Moreblessing Mbire

Rural women in Zimbabwe contribute immensely to the economic development of the country through agrarian development both at subsistence and commercial levels.  Women make up the largest proportion of farm laborers and their role in utilizing land through crop production, livestock care for the sustenance of families can not be undervalued.

Constitution Making Process: An Opportunity to Engage

Tuesday, June 23, 2009 - 16:30, by Moreblessing Mbire

Momentum in the Constitution Making Process in Zimbabwe is building up. Last week, the Ministry of Women Affairs Gender and Community Development organised a Women’s Consultative Conference which was attended by women from various professional disciplines. I found Honourable D. Mwonzora’s presentation during the Conference very useful to me. It answered a lot of questions I had about the Constitution Making Process. He explained how the process was going to flow… ( Read on! )

Zimbabwe: A New Hope

Tuesday, March 17, 2009 - 19:00, by Moreblessing Mbire

I have wanted to post this for a long time but I have been overtaken by events. For many in Zimbabwe, the inauguration of the Prime Minister, Mr. Tsvangirai and subsequent appointment of cabinet ministers had been long over due. The Global Political Agreement was signed in September 2008 but it took several meetings for the three political parties (ZANU PF, MDC T and MDC) to finally agree to effect the formation of the government of national unity.

A few days after the entry of the two MDC factions into government things started moving. A lot of people could agree to this. Civil servants got… ( Read on! )

HIV and AIDS Talk Too Much?

Monday, March 09, 2009 - 17:30, by Moreblessing Mbire

One week ago, I was attending a course in which we had a discussion around behavior change with reference to HIV and AIDS. Zimbabwe like other developing nations is grappling with the challenges posed by the pandemic. AIDS is recorded as the most common cause of death among the African population. About 1, 600 children have their lives cut short due to the pandemic. The impact of HIV and AIDS on society as a whole is indeed incomprehensible, individuals, families and nations have been robbed of the most important people. Almost every one in Zimbabwe has experienced the effects of the HIV and… ( Read on! )
