Mutharika asked to resign in 60 days

Malawi’s President Bingu wa Mutharika has responded to calls for him to resign by saying he could rule Malawi forever if he wanted to.

“If I wanted to, I would use the majority I have and amend the constitution to rule for another term, or forever,” he told supporters at a rally.

“I will not resign because that’s not what the law says. I will only be able to do that when my term expires in 2014,” Mutharika said.

While Mutharika was saying this, his arch-foe and former President Bakili Muluzi, said he wants his son out.… ( Read on! )

World Bank Gives Malawi $30 million for agriculture sector

Cash strapped Malawi will get a $30 million credit from the  World Bank to shore up diversification from the maize and tobacco-based production systems, and engagement in more market oriented agriculture.

This is expected to enable 200,000 smallholder farmers improve their incomes and become more food secure. Agricultural diversification will also help Malawi improve its export base which is currently mainly based on tobacco.

Malawi’s United Democratic Front (UDF), the former ruling party that sponsored the candidature of current President Bingu wa Mutharika, has threatened massive protests if Atupele Muluzi is not released today.

Police arrested Atupele, a presidential aspirant and son to former president Bakili Muluzi on Tuesday,  on charges that he went ahead to hold a rally after city fathers had refused him authority.

This is the second high-profile arrest of a critic of Mutharika in less than a week.
