I came here because of my deep interest and affection for a land settled by the Dutch in the mid-seventeenth century, then taken over by the British, and at last independent; a land in which the native inhabitants were at first subdued, but relations with whom remain a problem to this day; a land which defined itself on a hostile frontier; a land which has tamed rich natural resources through the energetic application of modern technology; a land which once imported slaves, and now must struggle to wipe out the last… ( Read on! )

Why Black Folks Won’t Vote DA

Thursday, November 29, 2012 - 07:28, by Khaya Dlanga

Originially appeared on my news24 column in 2011-05-24 10:34

It’s not that black people are racist. And I won’t get into the “can black people be racist debate” so let’s leave that outside (yes, I’m talking to you person who was about to write that comment before you’ve even read the whole column).

In case we forget, the ANC also gets a very small percentage of the white vote. One could also easily argue that white people are racist and that’s why they don’t vote for the ANC so let’s not even go the racist argument route. There will be no winners. It’s an easy and… ( Read on! )

The ass out and other hugs

Friday, November 23, 2012 - 08:04, by Khaya Dlanga

The hug is not as simple as it seems. Nor as harmless as it appears to be. We always take hugs for granted – to our own detriment. Yet there are many intricacies that involve this age-old ritual known as the hug. The awkwardness comes in many different shapes and forms.

1: The ass out hug

Many men have experienced this… ( Read on! )

Why I am a$king for a rai$e

Sunday, November 18, 2012 - 09:57, by Khaya Dlanga

A few years ago I wrote my then employers the following note asking for a raise (during a recession). I got it. I did this when I was Copywriter at a certain advertising agency. (Don’t try this if you work for a financial institution).

Dear  …………..

Before I go into the reasons I would like to thank you for taking time from your busy day to read these lines on this particularly trivial issue. Ok, it’s not as insignificant to me as I am making it seem, I’m sure you can tell by the mere fact that I have decided to write about it. Ha ha ha! Excuse me for laughing out of turn, I am… ( Read on! )

The 6 word story bet that could make people cry

Wednesday, November 14, 2012 - 15:17, by Khaya Dlanga

According to an unverified legend (well, most legends become such because no one can prove them) Ernest Hemingway won a bet that had the following criteria: a) write a six word story that was so good that: b)  it could make people cry. This is the story. No one knows if he really wrote it, but let’s pretend he did. Had he been alive today, he would have killed it on Twitter.
