Tsjad har en av de raskest voksende økonomier i Afrika Sør for Sahara. Men det synes få steder i landet. President Idriss Deby forandret grunnloven og stilte til valg for 3. gang i mai 2006. Ett valg han vant uten problemer fordi store deler av opposisjonen boikottet valgte og trusler om straff for ikke å stemme på Deby var allmenn kjent.
