Nigerias president Goodluck Jonathan har store utfordringer foran seg. Valget i 2011 vil være en nasjonal milepæl. Maktkampen i landet vil fortsette fram mot valget.
Nigeria ble ført ut i en konstitusjonell krise da tidligere president Yar’Adua ble syk og døde vinteren 2010. En konfliktfylt periode endte med at Goodluck Jonathan tok over som president. Yar’Adua og hans støttespillere ønsket ikke å gi Jonathan, som da var visepresident, fullmakt til å fungere som president, selv om Yar’Adua var dødssyk og i en lengre periode oppholdt seg i Saudi-Arabia for å få medisinsk behandling. Dette førte til at Nigeria i en periode var uten et fungerende statsoverhode.
