Det politiske landskapet i Mosambik har siden fredsavtalen i 1992 i realiteten kun bestått av partiene Frelimo og Renamo. Frelimo oppsto i 1962 som en frigjøringsbevegelse i kampen mot det portugisiske kolonistyret. Renamo ble dannet i 1975 som en militær motstandsgruppe mot Frelimo og den kommunistiske ideologien og fikk støtte fra det daværende Rhodesia og fra apartheidstyret i Sør-Afrika. Siden det svært jevne valget i 1999 har Renamo tapt oppslutning og har ikke klart å framstå som et troverdig regjeringsalternativ. Les mer >
