Guinea-Bissau ligger på vestkysten av Afrika, med Senegal i nord og Guinea i sør. Elver krysser lavlandet ved kysten, mens det østlige innlandet er tørrere og har mer kupert terreng. Klimaet er varmt og fuktig, med regntid fra mai til oktober. Rundt 40-45 prosent av befolkningen er muslimer, mellom 5 og 10 prosent er kristne, og resten hører til animistiske afrikanske religioner.
