Ghana blir av mange fremholdt som et foregangsland på det afrikanske kontinentet. Ved det omstridte valget i 2008 vant Den nasjonale demokratiske kongress (NDC) makten fra Det nye patriotiske parti (NPP). Dette var første gang et demokratisk valgt parti i Ghana ga makten videre til et opposisjonsparti. Valgkampen bar preg av optimisme knyttet til at Ghana gjorde store oljefunn i 2007.
