Regimet i Etiopia sikrer seg et stadig strammere grep om samfunnet og opposisjonen, også ved valget i mai 2010. Uløste militære konflikter med nabolandene Eritrea og Somalia utgjør fortsatt en trussel, og det samme gjør en rekke interne konflikter. Likevel opplever landet en kraftig økonomisk vekst, og flere sosiale indikatorer som forventet levealder og skoleoppslutning peker i riktig retning.
