Til tross for at Botswanas økonomi ble hardt rammet av den internasjonale krisen, spesielt gjennom sjokkartet nedgang i diamantmarkedet, ser det ut til at myndighetene har styrt landet gjennom nedgangsperioden med sikker hånd. Ved inngangen til 2010 pekte de fleste indikatorer oppover. På det politiske felt står demokratiet like sterkt som før. Et nær plettfritt gjennomført valg har befestet regjeringspartiets sterke stilling, men dannelsen av et nytt parti kan samtidig gjøre botswansk politikk mer spennende enn noen gang siden 1966.
