Kun en gang i 2009 nådde Angola overskriftene i verdens medier. Det var under Afrikamesterskapet i fotball, da det togolesiske landslaget ble beskutt på grensa til den angolanske provinsen Cabinda. Et vellykket arrangement på nye milliardstadioner skulle skape et inntrykk av et fredelig og fremadstormende land, men angrepet forhindret det. Midt under fotballturneringen ble også den nye grunnloven vedtatt i all hast.
