Sierra Leone: 'All political parties involved in electoral fraud'

Freetown - Newly appointed Chairman of National Electoral Commission (NEC) and Chief Electoral Commissioner, Christina Thorpe last Friday announced that it was regrettable to note that an analysis of the 2002 local government elections revealed widespread electoral irregularities, which included ballot stuffing by some polling officials in a number of polling stations in favour of all political parties.

She maintained that this practice was common in a number of polling stations as well as for independent candidates across the nation, improper filling of polling day forms and in some cases polling agents did not sign the results as required by regulations.

Thorpe told journalists at a press briefing at their head office that the NEC, International Foundation for Electoral Systems and a UN Senior Electoral Adviser, Justice Johann Kriegler conducted a statistical analysis of polling stations and voter turnout and it was discovered that a lot of irregularities took place during the polls.

She vowed that those found wanting of electoral malpractice during the 2004 Local Government Election would be punished and blacklisted in order to avoid electoral irregularities in the 2007 elections.

The newly appointed Chairman explained that the Commission would train party and polling agents in order to put in place corrective measures to prevent such recurrences in the future.

She disclosed that in trying to achieve their objective as an independent, credible and well resourced institution they have mapped out seven detailed steps, which include capacity building, boundary delimitation, establishment of an IT System and infrastructural development.
