Nigeria: Vice President cautions media over Biafra separatists

Abuja - Vice President Atiku Abubakar, yesterday declared that the activities of the Movement for Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafara (MASSOB) were treasonable, warning media practitioners to shun publicizing the group's antics.

Speaking while playing host to top management of Kano State owned Triumph Publishing Company Limited, led by its Managing Director, Alhaji Ahmud Adnan Audi, the vice-president denounced the group, noting that activities of the group were treasonable.

He recalled the laudable role which journalists in the country had played to enthrone democracy, even at the risk of their lives and that "the media have always been part of the democratic struggle in Nigeria".

According to him, "they are partners in democracy, in the last five years, because of the treasonable publications of some cases they report inaccuracies, and they aid treasonable publication of some undemocratic individuals.

"Of course, you have every right to publish the truth because, that is why you are here, but you must draw a line between what is true and national interest", Atiku submitted.

The Vice-President condemned the recent publicity given to the activities of the group, adding that "imagine the media giving such support and undue coverage to MASSOB. Remember we fought the war to keep this country together, yet there is still somebody still talking of Biafra. It doesn't help the corporate existence of this country" he added.

The Vice-President noted that with regret that many journalists work without receiving their pat as at when due, wondering how such media practitioners could avoid inducement. he observed that "if these people are not paid their salaries as and when due, there is always the tendency of these chaps to fall within the trap of inducement from mischief makers, but if regular salary is paid him, he will not be corruptible".

Earlier, Adnan Audi, told the Vice-President that the Newspapers publications were currently circulating among ten states in Northern, and hoped to cover the entire region by the end of the year.

He also promised covering the entire nation by the end of next year, adding that the company was into commercial publishing. To this end, the visitors solicited the Federal Government patronage and promised quality jobs
