Tunisia: First ever private TV channel to start broadcasting soon

Tunis - After the launching of the first private radio station last November, Television will have its first-ever private station in Tunisia.

On February 13th 2004, an agreement to this effect was signed between Communication Technologies and Transportation Minister, Sadok Rabeh and the channel founder, Mr. Larbi Nasra.

The creation of private radio and television stations was announced by President Ben Ali on November 7, 2003. On that day, "Radio MOSAIC FM", the first private radio station started broadcasting.

The new TV station "is going to be a general interest channel focusing mostly on entertainment programs and targeting a young audience," Mr. Nasra said in a newspaper interview. The channel will broadcast digitally on the Hotbird satellite around the clock, seven days a week.

Arabic will be the main language of the station, said Mr. Nsara. "The tone needs to be light for a broader audience yet entertaining," he added. The use of foreign languages is however considered for certain programs, such as tourism documentaries.

As a general interest channel, "Nasr TV" intends to provide viewers with a variety of programs: culture, entertainment, i.e. movies and series, game and children's shows, women programs, sports, etc

A total investment of 20 million dinars ($17 million), originating from capital resources and bank loans, were injected to complete a project of state-of-the-art studio sets, located in La Soukra, a Tunis suburb. Mr. Nasra plans to recover his investments through advertisement earnings/inflows, both local and foreign.

Part of the staff has been hired, he says, most of them administrative and technical executives. The rest, a total of 150 employees, are in being selected. Mr. Nasra made it a top priority to hire professionals from the Tunisian market. "I want to show the world that I can trust those pros into making of Nasr TV one of the greatest channels in terms of innovation and quality. Why not, like TF1 ?" (The first French Channel."
