South Africa: Malema to challenge hate speech ruling

Johannesburg (South Africa) - ANC Youth League President Julius Malema will challenge the Johannesburg Equality Court’s hate speech and harassment charge handed down to him today. He was found guilty after making comments about Jacob Zuma ’s rape accuser and as such was instructed to pay R50,000 to a centre for abused women and apologise unreservedly for the comments.

Malema’s lawyer Tumi Mokwena told Business Day Online that Malema and his legal team are unhappy with the court’s decision and as such will be lodging an appeal against the judgement with the Supreme Court of Appeal.

“We disagree with the judgement and as such will be lodging an appeal,” he said.

Mokwena said the appeal would be based on the context in which Malema’s utterances were made.

The Sonke Justice Network, the NGO responsible for lodging a complaint against Malema, say they respect his right to appeal but will do everything in the power to defend today’s judgement.

“We must ensure that this milestone in woman’s rights is upheld,”said Mbuyiselo Botha Sonke spokesperson.
