Despite a progressive national legislation, gays and lesbians in South Africa are subject to threats, assault and murder because of their orientation. How can the situation be as bad in a state where the law gives queers the right to marry and where they are to be protected from discrimination, as in states where homosexuality is strictly forbidden? How does the Norwegian authorities work against discrimination against this group?
