Zimbabwe: Botswana rangers arrested

Harare (Zimbabwe) - Zimbabwean police have detained three armed Botswana game rangers after they strayed into the neighbouring country while pursuing troublesome lions. The arrests near the resort town of Victoria Falls is threatening to reignite hostilities between the two countries.

Zimbabwe has always accused Botswana of ill treating its nationals who are often rounded up for overstaying or entering the neighbouring country without valid documents.

Botswana’s Ambassador to Zimbabwe Ms Gladys Kokorwe said the rangers were tracking down two lions that had killed cattle at a village on the border between the two countries.

The trio was intercepted by a Zimbabwe border patrol on January 19  as they tried to re-inter Botswana. Zimbabwean authorities say they were found not to possess passports.

Ms Kokorwe said she was dispatching an official to Victoria Falls, about 800 kilometres west of Harare to ascertain the nature of the problem.
