Addressing leaders of political parties in Nouakchott on Thursday, Ould Boubacar unveiled a calendar, which begins with a constitutional referendum on 24 January 2006, followed by parliamentary and municipal election on 19 November 2006 and senatorial polls on 21 January 2007.
He said that an ordinary session of the CMJD chaired by its chairman, Col. Ely Ould Mohamed Vall on 8 November decided to accelerate the return to constitutional rule.
During Thursday’s meeting attended by cabinet ministers, representatives of political parties and the civil society, Ould Boubacar reiterated his government’s willingness to continue the consultative management of the process towards the restoration of democratic institutions in conjunction with political parties and civil society bodies.
The five-month reduction of the transitional period was decided during consultations by the authorities, political parties and civil society organisations on 25-29 October.
When Col. Ould Mohamed Vall’s junta seized power in a bloodless coup d’etat on 3 August 2005, it declared a two-year transitional period before handing over the government to elected leaders.
