Sierra Leone: Amputees threaten to sue SLPP government

Amputees and War Wounded Association in Sierra Leone Tuesday threatened to sue the Sierra Leone Peoples Party (SLPP) government for deliberately failing to respond to their welfare as was stated in the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) Report.

Alhaji Lamin Jusu Jarka, Chairman of the Association revealed to Concord Times that since the end of the TRC hearing their reparations issue has not been addressed and that "if they fail to respond to our requests we would sue them to the International Court of Justice." He pointed out that government is not doing anything in their interest and disclosed that at a meeting recently held in Makeni by amputees in the Northern region, it was resolved that their reparation benefits should be SU $ 3000 as a monthly allowance which will facilitate their housing, medical facilities and take care of their families as well.

Alhaji Jarka said government should see it as a permanent concern to set up a victim funds so as to give reparation dues to war wounded and amputees, reiterating that government has failed to protect them and their families.

"If they went all out and secured funds for ex-combatants, trained and provided them with jobs, then why can't government go and beg for us as well so that we can get our reparation," he asked.

In Bo, Kono and other parts of the country, he said, "we also spoke with one voice that we are entitled to the same amount that was suggested in Makeni.

Government should ask Guadaffi, president of Libya, who is one the major contributors to our suffering," and continues, "the TRC report itself did not publish any picture of amputees instead they went and used pictures of able people."
